Exclusive sneak peek.

This is it, the final interview before BLURPPY’S first exclusive for 2013.  We end this interview series with an artist out of Montreal, Quebec named Marie Bergeron.  She describes herself as “freelance graphic designer / illustrator, geek part time.” I asked her to be part of this series after I saw her “Brothers In Arms” piece. I have been hooked ever since.  Read along and get inside the head of artist Marie Bergeron.

BLURPPY:  How would YOU describe your style or how would YOU like it described. You always get OUR/ BLOGGER point of view, let’s hear from YOU.

Marie: I always find it hard to answer this question. I don’t think I have ONE particular style. I say it’s kind of a mix between comic books and sketching. I like to have some sort of a movement when drawing, halftones, contrast and usually lots of light. It mostly depends on what or which feeling / emotion I want to show in the drawing.

BLURPPY:  How did you get started in the “poster” scene?  What was your FIRST print?

Marie:  Basically, I did a lot of fan art but it has always been a specific scene more than a poster. I did some posters during my degree at the ‘Centre of Design’ in Montreal but it was completely different from what I usually do. My first “real” print has to be my Nicolas Cage portrait…I think.

Nicholas Cage by Marie Bergeron

BLURPPY:  This one really stands out in your portfolio.  You should send him one.  I bet he would love it!  You really captured his essence in the eyes.  What are your 3 favorite pieces that you have done that you feel really show off your talent or truly capture a subject you love.

Marie:  I know there are some of my prints that are very popular like Dark Knight and Brothers in Arms, but for me they aren’t my personal favorites. I have to go with Cage just because, like I said, it was the first time I found some sort of a style. The Wall was a very fun piece to work on as I had no clue how it would come out and was very happy with the result. Third place, I think my King Kong piece has to be in there. I know it’s not the best but I love the simplicity in it.

BLURPPY:  Sometimes “simple” speaks volumes. I think you did a great job at showing King Kong’s mass and power with this piece.  He looks menacing just sitting there. What would be your dream project?  What would you KILL to work on?  This can be a real project or something crazy like “design the next Death Star for Lord Vader.”

Depp by Marie Bergeron

Marie:  I would love to work on a great novel / comic and have it get very popular (lol.)  I know I don’t have the skills for it but I would love to make a new Iron Man  or Batman suit…designing something for a movie, ANY movie, or even do a commissioned portrait for an actor/actress, why not?!

BLURPPY:  I can’t imagine how hard it would be to tackle an iconic thing like the Iron Man or Batman’s suits.  Actually my favorite part of the 2012 SDCC was the Marvel Booth with all the actual Iron Man armors from the movies on display.  It took “impressive” to a whole new level. Each suit was more detailed than the other. I have NO idea how they are going to top that one this year. What is your process like?  How do you get started on a project?

Marie:  I always start by finding pictures related to the subject, examples, what people have done so far… I sketch, and than I start the real deal.

BLURPPY:  I love this time lapse video you did for “Brothers in Arms”.  It really shows immense amount of work that goes into your process.  Whose work do you follow, love, crave?

Reddit Alien Robot by Sam Spratt

Marie:  With Twitter and stuff, you get to love a bunch of great artists! I’m always amazed to see Sam Spratt’s art…just wow! Love Craig Henry, Paul Blow, Logan Faerber, Charles Santoso, Justin Mezzell my friends JP Valderrama, MC Baldassari, Pascaline Lefebvre and Nicolas Ménard. The list is definitely too long…

BLURPPY:  Again, it’s great to discover new artists.  Can’t wait to delve into delve into these guys sites and see more of their work.  How do you see the whole “pop-culture poster craze” evolving?  What is your hope for it?

Marie:  It’s definitely getting serious and with digital art now, the community is growing like it never did before. Social media are pretty much what made sharing and viewing so simple for the artists to get noticed. Even there though, there are so many people creating these days that it is hard to find a decent place among those talents. Nothing last though…

Dark Knight by Marie Bergeron

BLURPPY:  I agree but like I mentioned in previous artist interviews I think it’s up to  the studios, galleries and even the blogs/ websites to reach out, look for and discover new talent.  What is your “can’t live without possession?”….NO KIDS or PETS!

Marie:  Can’t live without video games that’s for sure, movies and music.

BLURPPY: You should check out a great puzzle game for iPad that artist Marko Manev and I are addicted to called “The Room”.  What is your favorite guilty pleasure?…..ham, Honey Boo-Boo, Junior mints, American Pickers, coffee ice cream, long walks on the beach….etc…

Marie:  Sleeping for days! lol no not really, I don’t know….

BLURPPY:  I will always take a full day of pajamas and Netflix.  How is 2013 shaping up for you so far?  Any projects/ shows/ collaborations you can talk about or tease?

Marie: Lots of personal projects, some for clients, and upcoming shows in NY and L.A…which I can’t talk about.

Bruce Lee by Marie Bergeron

BLURPPY:  I recently saw your “Bruce Lee” print at the Hero Complex Gallery art show entitiled “Weapon of Choice”.  It looked fantastic. What is your favorite movie of all time?

Marie:  If I think hard about it, American Beauty seems to pops in my head every time. But there are so many great movies. Alien, Braveheart, The Shinning, The Professional….

Prometheus are you seeing this? By Marie Bergeron

Prometheus are you seeing this? By Marie Bergeron

BLURPPY:  I know, it’s practically impossible to pick just one.  I was recently told that this is “the worst question ever.”  I’m starting to buy into that sentiment. Pick one from each line as your favorite:

Peanut butter and jelly or Ham and cheese: Peanut butter and jelly

Whedon’s AVENGERS or Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT RETURNS: Even if I die every time I see Downey, I have to say Nolan’s Dark Knight

Summer on the West Coast or Fall in New England: FALL!

Kubrick’s The Shining Movie or King’s The Shining Book: Kubrick’s movie all the way

Morning or night: Night

Pizza or sushi: lol…pizza!

Justin Bieber or Gangnam style: NEITHER!

Cats or dogs:  Dogs even though I like my cat so much

Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd:  Pink Floyd

Charlie Brown Christmas or It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown:  Neither, I hate Charlie Brown…..

I would like to thank Marie for her time on this project.  I hope you take a moment to check out the rest of her work on her website HERE or follow her on TWITTER and FACEBOOK.  Now lets summarize what we have learned.  Marie REALLY needs to send Nicholas Cage a copy of her portrait, she has a cat but LOVES dogs and like Tracie Ching…she is NOT a fan of Charlie Brown.  I was going to say that this was un-American but she is Canadian so I guess it just doesn’t matter.  (Tracie on the other hand is a different story!)

Next up….the big reveal.  Blurppy’s first exclusive for 2013 drops tomorrow, 9am PST.  I hope you like it, come back and check it out!
